Bill Schick 2004 - “The Gargoyle” (1 of 1) (#BS-G04)
One of Mr. Schick's top-of-the-line works of art. This cue made its debut at the October, 2004 International Cue Collectors Show in Park City, Utah. It was photographed for the story on the show in the December issue of Billiards Digest. Bill Schick makes only 12 or so one-of-a-kind cues a year at present.
The Gargoyle designs were done with a scrimshaw needle, one of only three cues Bill has done in all-scrimshaw technique, which due to the delicacy of the needle takes more time than engraving. (Most of Bill's cues have been worked using a combination of an engraving tool and scrimshaw needle. Bill cuts in the main design with engraving tool, then uses a scrimshaw needle to add the detail.) You might say that this cue is “all detail”.

Starting with an extraordinary piece of Amboyna Burl, this cue was inlayed with ivory floating points, windows, and notched diamonds. The elliptical windows were then scrimshawed with fanciful and very intricately drawn Gargoyle designs, each one unique. The design is embellished with more engraving and touches of gold: ivory dot inlays bordered in gold, and ivory and gold rings. Everything white on this cue is ivory, including the solid flat-faced ivory joint, the butt cap, and the ferrules. The pin is bronze with a 3/8-10 thread, custom made to coordinate with the burl wood, with an ivory tip engraved with his trademark “S” insignia. The butt cap is engraved “SCHICK 3-20-04”.

For each of his finest cues, Bill Schick crafts a special presentation case. This case was carved from an exquisite piece of curly maple. A “fan” of amboyna burl adorns the top lid and has an ivory insert engraved “THE GARGOYLE by Schick”. Ivory knobs open the case. Mr. Schick has only built ten of these special cases in his entire 33-year career as a cue maker.
