Nova (#N-SC) 1998 “Super Cue” 6 pts. Ivory, Ebony, Malachite, Burl, 3514 inlays
This spectacular one-of-a-kind 1998 cue is the masterwork of Steve Miller, who was at that time working with Nubs Wagner at Nova Cues. The original price was $25,000. This is a very special cue, which deserves to be a highlight in a major collection.
The delicacy and intricacy of the 3514 inlays in this cue are a wonder. Steve stopped counting after he logged 400 hours working on it. For the last several years it was not for sale, and was on display in Japan. Nova has not been producing cues in recent years, although Nubs Wagner has plans to re-open his shop. Even so, he states, “it will always be the fanciest cue ever made by Nova”.
The Gabon ebony forearm has eight inlaid ivory points with two very thin veneers of ivory and black. Although they appear to be engraved, the feather design is composed of tiny ivory and black inlays, 198 in each point. In between the points are wedges of malachite capped with ivory. The ebony butt sleeve has 8 shorter, reversed points echoing the same design. The Wildwood spalted maple burl handle features a geometric pattern of Malachite and ivory inlays. The piloted solid ivory joint has a 5/16-14 stainless steel pin. The cue is finished with an ivory butt cap engraved with the -NOVA-CUSTOM- logo. As with all Nova cues, the durable and beautiful finish is applied by hand, and still looks as good as it did when it came out of the shop seven years ago.
The 2 original shafts are 12.9mm each and have black linen phenolic collars, ivory ferrules and backed Moori tips. They are unplayed and pristine, test hit only by the cue maker. Weight: 19.75 oz. Length: 58 ½ inches.
The Super Cue was featured in the color section of the 1999 Blue Book of Pool Cues, Second Edition, on page 80.
