Craig Petersen (CP-T67)  -  c. 1967 Hoppe-Titlist custom cue
Chicago's North Shore Billiards on Paulina Street started out as a 4-table “back room” in a bowling alley on the 2nd floor.  By 1961, owner Bob Cohen had taken out all the bowling lanes and put in thirty-two 4 ½' x 9' tables, two carom billiards, and one 10' snooker table. In the spring of '65 Craig set up his first shop in a 10'x12' room on the side of North Shore Billiards. Craig had only one simple woodworking lathe; no other machines. This cue has had one owner for the past 39 years, a friend who knew Craig since their days together at Sullivan High School.
This Titlist conversion cue was built for him as a replacement for an earlier Petersen cue that was stolen. It was made from one of a dozen Titlist blanks that were purchased by Bob Cohen for Petersen from the estate of Herman Rambow, who was the master cue maker at Brunswick Billiards and also made custom conversion cues under his own name in his Chicago shop until his passing in 1967.
Craig Petersen made cues in several locations in the Chicago area until he left us in 1992 at the age of 46. He made fewer than 1000 cues during two decades he made cues. This is a rare early example in very good condition.
DESCRIPTION:
Early circa 1967 Craig Petersen Titlist conversion cue with four full-spliced rosewood points in a straight-grain maple forearm. The four veneers are the classic Brunswick-Balke-Collender `Titlist' colors: purple, turquoise blue, mahogany, and maple. The piloted brass joint (used on his early cues) has a 5/16-14 thread and brass pin, with black linen phenolic joint and shaft collars. The rosewood butt sleeve has a Hoppe-style 5/8-inch ivory ring above the black phenolic butt plate (no bumper). The white with green speck Irish linen wrap was replaced in 1992. Finish is the original lacquer, which is in very good condition, excepting two small chips, one each at the bases of two of the points. Overall both the butt and shaft are in very good condition.
One original 11.6mm shaft with 5/8-inch fibre ferrule, played but fairly clean, especially considering its age.  Weight: 19.25 oz.  Length: 57 inches.
This is a one-owner cue.  A letter from the original owner will be included with the cue. Craig Petersen cues are in great demand by collectors, and this is a very rare early example.
