DOC FRY (DF74-GR) - 1974 Black and Silver glitter ring, penny under bumper
F. Lamar `Doc' Fry was a pharmacist in the Philadelphia area who made cues as a hobby from the 1960s until 1976. His cues have become very collectible because of their unique look and rarity. He is particularly known for using thick rings of marbleized plastic or glitter under clear plastic.
This is one of his later and fancier cues, made in 1974 (he died in 1976). The cue can be dated precisely by the penny under the bumper (1974), which Doc frequently used to both identify and date his cues. Fry cues are otherwise unmarked.
The forearm is an ebonized hardwood, and features a 5-piece `A' ring: two silver glitter rings with a black plastic band in the middle, sandwiched in-between white plastic rings. The black, white and silver glitter butt sleeve repeats the same design on a larger scale, measuring three inches, plus the 1-1/4 inch black butt cap. Four notched mother-of-pearl diamonds are inlaid in the black band.
The piloted stainless steel joint has a 5/16-14 pin. The joint and shaft collars are white fibre with nickel silver and black fibre ringwork. Everything, including the finish, shaft, and black rayon wrap, is in very good original condition.
Butt length is 28.5 inches, shaft length 28.5 inches, 57 inches overall.
One original 11.6mm shaft, 3-5/8 oz., with 1-inch composition ferrule, played but very clean.
Weight: 19-3/4 oz.
This is a superb example of a Doc Fry cue.
