BILL SCHICK ORIGINALS (BS80) - 1980 Bird's-eye Maple Merry Widow, original finish, wrap, and shafts
Bill Schick cues are increasingly hard to find, as he now makes only a dozen or so cues each year. New Schick cues currently start at $3,000 and up - mostly up, as he prefers to concentrate on commissions for his elaborate themed cues. Most of these feature his intricate scrimshaw and engraving, all of which is done freehand.
“Fez” Kasem, a road player who backed and gambled with many of the great players of the 60s and 70s, has owned the cue for approximately 25 years. A former road player himself, Bill remembers Fez, who traveled with Cowboy Jimmy Moore. Fez acquired the cue by winning it from another player.
This 1980 `Merry Widow' cue has a Bird's-eye maple nose and butt sleeve with a rich honey-colored stain. The piloted stainless steel joint has a stainless steel pin with a 5/16-14 thread. The white Delrin butt cap has a brown linen phenolic ring above it, and is engraved “SCHICK 80”. This logo is the one used from the late 70's until 1980: “SCHICK” and the last two digits of the year the cue was made.
The butt cap is protected by a black rubber bumper attached with a hex screw.
The cue has the original finish, including the Meucci-style coating on the white with green speck linen wrap. Bill says that during that time frame 50% of his customers ordered it that way. The finish on the forearm and wrap is excellent. The butt sleeve has dings and scratches.
Two original shafts with brown linen phenolic joint and shaft collars, and thick nickel silver rings, both played with some chalk stain:
Shaft #1: 12.85mm ivory ferrule (cracked), 4.25 oz., 28.5 inches;
Shaft #2: 12.85mm fibre ferrule (not original), 4 oz., 28 inches.
Weight: 18-7/8 to 19-1/8 oz., depending on shaft used. Length: 56-1/2 to 57 inches.
The cue has been priced to take into account the need for new ferrules.
This is an opportunity to own a vintage cue from one of the finest cuemakers working today.
