Gus Szamboti c. 1973 rare 4-point Brazilian Rosewood, 4 shafts (GS73)
Gus Szamboti made cues for only 19 years, from 1969 until 1988. Szamboti cues are among the most collectible of all cues, and those with rosewood are especially highly prized. Fewer than one in six of Gus's cues were made with rosewood prongs; most were ebony. His son, Barry, now carries on the family tradition.
Four points of Brazilian rosewood with black, green, white, and black veneers into straight-grained maple forearm. The butt sleeve is a beautiful piece of Brazilian rosewood and is finished with a white delrin butt cap and black rubber bumper attached with a hex screw. Overall the finish is in very good condition; there are some minor nicks and scratches in the butt sleeve. Richard Black authenticated the cue in a 1992 letter.
The piloted stainless steel joint has a 5/16-14 pin. The wrap is white with green speck Irish linen, and is reasonably clean but has some patina, which would be expected in a 35-year-old cue, no matter how well cared for.
There are four shafts, all with ivory ferrules, all 29-1/4” in length. Two are the original Gus shafts, and two more are believed to have been made by Bill Schick sometime in the mid-to-late 1980's. Tips range from 12.5mm to 13mm. The black linen phenolic joint and shaft collars have nickel silver rings.
Shaft #1 original, by Gus Szamboti - 12.85mm, 4.1 oz., original ivory ferrule, backed LePro tip, clean, very good condition; slight roll but playable.
Shaft #2 original, by Gus Szamboti - 12.5mm, 4 oz., slotted ringwork in collars matching butt of cue, new ivory ferrule and backed tip, probably by Bill Schick; straight, very clean, excellent condition.
Shaft # 3: matches the originals, probably by Bill Schick - 13mm, 4 oz., straight, immaculate “like new” condition.
Shaft # 4: matches the originals, probably by Bill Schick - 12.9mm, 3.8 oz.; straight, unchalked “like new” condition.
Weight is 19.7 to 20 oz., varying slightly depending on the shaft used. The butt is straight and sound, weighs 15.9 oz. and is 28-3/4" in length. The cue length is 58 inches.
With its rosewood prongs and excellent condition, this is a rare and very desirable example of a classic Gus Szamboti cue.
